This workshop is open to high school girls in grades 11 and 12 who are interested in STEM, coding, and data analysis. No prior coding experience required. Applicants will be notified of acceptance status by early/mid October.
Workshop Description
Have you ever wondered how data scientists formulate questions, analyze and visualize data, and draw conclusions? In this workshop for NYC high school girls interested in STEM, coding, and data analysis, students will be introduced to coding in R through an investigation of NYC transportation data: Citibike, Taxi, and Flights. Participants will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the workshop.

Cost and Travel Support
Thanks to funding from the R Consortium, this workshop is free for participants. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the workshop, however each participant will be provided with a 2-trip MetroCard to reimburse the cost of travel. Lunch will be provided.
Lead Instructors
Emily Dodwell: Emily Dodwell is a Senior Inventive Scientist in the Statistics Research Department at AT&T Labs and a member of the R Forwards teaching team. Prior to joining AT&T Labs in 2015, Emily taught high school math for three years at Choate Rosemary Hall. She received her M.A. in statistics from Yale University and B.A. in mathematics from Smith College.
Joyce Robbins: Joyce Robbins, Ph.D., is Lecturer in Discipline in the Statistics Department at Columbia University, where she specializes in data visualization. She is a member of the R Forwards teaching team, and she was elected to serve as publications officer of the Statistical Graphics Section of the American Statistical Association Section beginning in 2018. Robbins received her doctorate in sociology from Columbia University, her M.A. in sociology and anthropology from Tel Aviv University and her B.S.E. in civil engineering and operations research from Princeton University.
